NAVAL AIR FACILITY ATSUGI, Japan — The first military-assisted flight out of the Navy’s Tokyo-area air base lifted off about 12:40 p.m. Monday, with 153 family members bound for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The flight was the second to leave since plans for military-assisted flights out of Japan for families of servicemembers were announced Thursday, leaving some wondering if the leisurely pace of flights would lead to fewer people leaving than anticipated.

More than 8,000 family members have signed up for military-assisted flights at U.S. bases in Japan, according to figures compiled by Stars and Stripes.

The Shades of Green on Walt Disney World Resort offers programs and discounts to surviving families of fallen warriors. The Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) Survivor Family Program offers a 50% discount off normal room rates to family members and sponsored accompanying authorized users regardless of cause. The Status/Relationship section of the identification card must read “DB” (Death Beneficiary) or “Unremarried Widow” or the present the DD1300 to serve as eligibility for this program.

The survivor benefit can be applied to a total of three guest rooms (including suites) as long as the survivor is the primary occupant and are offered for a maximum of 14 days. Reservations can be made a maximum of 12 months before arrival and a minimum of 48 hours before arrival for online reservations. If you anticipate arriving less than 48 hours before check in call (888) 593-2242.
